Causes of Hair Becoming a Hairband

White hair or often called gray hair is synonymous with elderly people. In fact, some people can have gray hair faster. What exactly causes gray hair growth? Hair color is the result of coloring in hair follicles from a dye called melanin. There are two types of dyes, namely eumelanin and pheomelanin. Hair will be darker if eumelanin is more dominant. The level of melanin in a person's body can change over time, which in turn causes hair to also change color.

Conditions That Affect Hair Color

Many assumptions that stress can accelerate the aging factor, including the growth of gray hair earlier than it should. Although some cases support this assumption, but until now it has not been proven scientifically. Here are some conditions that can affect the formation of gray hair.
  • Age factor

  • Naturally, changing hair color to gray or white occurs with age or is called achromotrichia. When we get older, melanin production in the body will decrease, causing gray hair. This is thought to be caused by increased cell damage due to aging. Usually the color change starts in the hair inside the nose, followed by hair on the head, beard, then hair in other parts of the body, finally the hair on the eyebrows.
  • Genetic

  • The cause of the growth of gray hair on this one is inevitable. People whose hair has turned white or gray even though they are still young may be caused by genetic factors. That means, parents or grandparents also experienced the same thing when they were young.
  • Health condition

  • Suffering from certain diseases can also be a cause of the growth of gray hair. Congenital conditions or genetic disorders such as albino, when a person has little or no pigment in the hair, eyes, and skin so that it looks white or pale. Besides albino, vitiligo can also be a cause of gray hair growth. This is an autoimmune condition that causes parts of the hair and skin to lose color pigment. Problems with the pituitary gland or the thyroid gland can also cause gray hair. But after these conditions are resolved, hair color can return to normal. Lack of nutrients can cause hair to become smoother, thinner, and brittle and change color due to decreased melanin production. Examples are vitamin B12 deficiency or pernicious anemia. Werner's syndrome can also cause gray hair at a young age.
  • Smoke

  • Smoking can be a factor causing gray hair growth. In fact, there are studies that reveal the relationship between smoking and the growth of gray hair in the age of less than 30 years.
  • Treatment

  • Patients who undergo radiotherapy sometimes turn their hair white, but will return to the original color some time later.
Until now there has been no scientifically proven product that can slow or prevent the growth of gray hair, ranging from supplements, vitamins, proteins, or certain dietary patterns.
